Site Description: Located just northwest of Burwell in northcentral Nebraska, about half of this IBA’s 10,000 acres is a lake formed by the dam on the Calamus River; the other half is the surrounding native Sandhills prairie with meandering streams and associated shrublands. There are 31 miles of shoreline with riparian forested habitat (cottonwood and willow).

Ornithological Summary: Greater Prairie-Chickens and other grassland birds (Field and Grasshopper Sparrows among them) can be found in the prairie uplands. The large open water area attracts high numbers of migrating waterfowl, shorebirds, and other waterbirds. Bald Eagles are common winter visitors.
